Eyes and Ears
Conley Leung is a designer who transited to Seattle from Hong Kong in 2017. Different cultures, graphic styles, snacks, and stories always surrounded her. In 2020, she started to present her thoughts through acrylic paintings. Her first painting is a Nissin seafood cup noodle, and she turned the cooking method into a graphic in the background.
In Hong Kong, we usually add spam and pan-fried egg to our instant noodles as the HK-styled all-day breakfast. I had my first spam musubi when I moved to the US, and I introduced musubi to my wife, who has been living in the States for 10 years. She loves this simple but delicious combination, and we started to make our own at home.
It is the original spam with some abstract mountains and cultural graphics as the background of Hawaii.
Orange Bubble Gum is a Japanese snack packed in a tiny square paper box. It has many flavors like grapes, melon, strawberry, and apple. I like the graphics on the packing; it is a water painting graphic with a traditional style.
The idea is to show the combined flavor and experience you can get when chewing the bubble gum inside your mouth.
One time, I bought a pack of banana milk from H mart, the milk you can get comes inside a paper box instead of a plastic container. The taste is different from what I had in Korea, so I started to google it to find out why it was different.
I have emphasized the banana with a bold outline and added abstract shapes that gave the creamy and smooth feel.
This is a cookie from a Japanese cartoon Crayon Shin Chan. When I was young, I bought a Shin Chan video game; in the game, you will gain HP after eating this cookie. I found that we also can get this cookie at some Asian grocery stores in the US, the cookie taste is not the best, but I love the packing design, and I sometime will crave it as late-night snack.
Sometime you just too tire to cook after a day of work sitting in front of the computer for more than 8 hours. During the time we have to stay at home and work remotely, my wife and I just addicted to this instant cup noodles.
One day I was starring at this empty noodle cup and think of may be I can start painting it as our wall decoration to record these stay home period. So I started my first painting. The abstract background is presenting the cooking method of this cup noodles.
Thank you for visiting.
